Label TextThe tradition of carving wood is a strong one in Germany, dating from such medieval masters as Veit Stross and Tilman Reimenschneider whose fantastically detailed altarpieces grace so many German churches and museums. This figure of an unknown churchman, perhaps St. Jerome, originally adorned the interior of a parish church. Carefully carved and once completely polychromed, the figure has great presence and life. The artist has also had considerable success in creating an illusion of depth within the limited thickness of the block of wood.ProvenanceMuseum purchase from Arnold Seligmann Rey & Co., Inc., NYOn View
