Label TextSubleyras trained first in Toulouse, then in Paris, before going to the French Academy in Rome in 1728. He gained great fame in Italy and remained there the rest of his life. He married Maria Felice Tibaldi, a skilled painter and miniaturist, in 1739. This portrait of Maria may have been painted as a marriage picture at the time of their wedding. She holds a miniature, which probably alludes to her skill in that type of painting. The painting on the easel behind her, and the finished paintings on the walls, must also be symbolic of her talents. ProvenanceFrom Muller & Cie, Amsterdam, to Helen Bigelow Merriman. Gift from Helen Bigelow Merriman, 1901 to Worcester Art Museum.
