Label TextIn his poetry cycle, Il trionfi, the fourteenth-century Italian humanist Petrarch described progressive experiences that universally affect human nature, imagined as a parade of floats with symbolic decoration. The Triumphs became a perennial subject for Renaissance artists, ideal for print series. Heemskerck and Coornhert adapted the theme to the Reformation era in the Low Countries. They added Prosperity to the series, symbolically conquered by Pride. Rich and beautiful, she rides in elegance, gazing at her own reflection. At her feet sits Envy, eating her own heart.
