Label TextA farmer’s son from North Holland, Heemskerck ran away from home to apprentice himself to a Delft painter, and later to Jan van Scorel in Haarlem. In 1532 he traveled to Rome carrying Scorel’s letters of introduction. He studied ancient and Renaissance works of art and literature, and even assisted Battista Franco and Francesco Salviati on their temporary decorations for the visit of Charles V to Rome in 1536. Heemskerck returned to Haarlem to build a successful painting practice and—like an Italian master—to design hundreds of prints.
