Label TextChrist told the parable of a diseased, starving vagabond, Lazarus, who came to the gate of a rich man’s palatial home. Its owner, Dives, loosed a ferocious dog to drive the beggar away, but the beast pitied his weakness and licked his sores. Lazarus died on that doorstep, and his soul was transported to heaven where he was comforted in the bosom of Abraham. Soon Dives followed him in death, but his spirit was tormented in hellfire. Now, greed and his disdain for the unfortunate were replaced with concern for his family, still living their sinful lives.
