Label Text2003-12-11: THE ADORATION OF THE CHRIST CHILD (left) and THE PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE (right) South German, ca. 1520 Oil on wood panels Museum purchase, 1949.9-10 There have been many attempts to name the artist who was responsible for these panels, but no argument has yet proved convincing. Certainly the artist knew the works of the Danube School painters, and it may be that he is closest to Cranach's early style in his technique. These paintings, and two others representing the Annunciation and the Visitation, are known to survive from a series that depicted the Life of the Virgin. Whether the series is complete in these four is not known. The small scale and jewel-like quality of the panels suggest they may have formed a small private or portable altarpiece for individual devotion.
