Label TextAlthough this painting has been linked more or less closely in the past with a variety of Sienese masters, including Simone Martini, Barna, and Lippo Memmi, its present condition makes an attribution extremely difficult. The gold background has been reapplied in modern times, and wide cracks with losses are present under restoration in the paint areas. Even so, the composition reveals the fluent use of line and the elegant detailing which were characteristic of Sienese painting in this period.
The lamb and the inscription on the scroll serve to identify the saint. The Latin sentence is taken from the service for the Feast of St. Agnes.
