Label TextThe designation "Master of the Magdalen" refers to an anonymous Tuscan painter of the latter part of the thirteenth century. He seems to have had quite a large studio, and many paintings more or less closely related to his style are known. This picture is probably by one of the Master's followers. The central figure of the crucified Christ is flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John. A sword is seen piercing the Virgin's breast, a symbol of her sorrow, which became a popular motif in later Italian paining. The three small figures at the bottom may represent the donors of the crucifix.ProvenanceR. Langton Douglas, London England
