Label TextBando Hikosaburo II in the role of the samurai Shida no Kotaro stands holding the sword he has used to cut a branch from a pine tree. The branch is shown dropping between him and Sanogawa Ichimatsu I as Chihara Hayato, another young samurai who is seated, with his right hand raised in protest. Double-check with Kabuki nenpyo. The checkered pattern worn by Sanogawa Ichimatsu became the rage in Edo due to the popularity of the actor; the pattern is still known in Japan as the "Ichimatsu pattern."
