Label TextCrivelli was a native of Venice, but he left there and eventually settled in the Marches. His style is related to the Paduan School of painters who were influenced by Squarcione. His crisp, angular line, his firm modeling of forms, and the individual quality of his figures are distinctive. This picture, which shows two Franciscan saints, is associated with five others in various collections. They were undoubtedly grouped vertically on the sides of a large altarpiece, which was probably commissioned for a church of the Franciscan order. The central panel of the altarpiece has not been definitely identified. On the basis of style, this picture and its companion piece are considered to be late works of the master, probably dating from the later 1480s.ProvenancePossibly Thomas Blayds, Esq., Castle Hill, Englefield Green, by 1849; possibly John Bentley (c. 1794-1867), London, by 1856; sold to Thomas Baring (1799–1873), 1856; bequeathed to his nephew, Thomas George Baring, 1st Earl of Northbrook (1826–1904); in the Northbrook collection until at least 1895; with R.
