Label TextAgnolo Gaddi, the son of the painter Taddeo Gaddi, was an important master who worked principally in Florence and nearby Prato. He had a large workshop and was responsible for fresco cycles as well as panel paintings. His style departed from the weight and clarity of his father's work, which had been strongly influenced by his teacher Giotto, and showed instead a crowding and a decorative linearity. This kind of image of the Virgin and Child is associated with Agnolo and his following. Although it seems to depict the Madonna of Humility rather than the Madonna Enthroned, the richness of the trappings and the graceful use of line deny the simplicity implied by the subject. The inclusion of saints and angels is also unusual for a Madonna of Humility format.
