Label TextPierre de Luxembourg was a short-lived (1369–1387) cardinal, whose extreme piety and mysticism made him a legend in Provence. His tomb was the seat of many miracles, and he was beatified in 1527. The coat of arms at the upper left in this panel is his family emblem and identifies him as the cardinal who is shown introducing the tiny donor figure to the Virgin and Child. The difference in scale between the holy figures and the donor is a remnant of the medieval tradition of showing human supplicants as tiny beside heavenly beings.ProvenanceEhrich Galleries, New York NY
