Label TextThis picture has in the past been associated with several different artists and schools and most frequently with the Master of the Magdalen. At this time, no definite attribution can be upheld. The flatness of the image and the emphasis on life and surface pattern are characteristic of thirteenth-century Italian painting, but the tender gesture of the Child and the suggestion of a maternal relationship between the figures is unusual and appealing. The molded framing is original, and the angels in the upper corners are probably the work of an assistant.ProvenanceR. Langton Douglas, London EnglandOn View
