Label TextAt the age of eighteen, Willem de Heusch left his hometown of Utrecht to go to Italy, where he spent a number of years. Like his teacher Jan Both, he was attracted to the mountainous terrain and golden light of the Italian countryside, a strong contrast to the flat and often overcast landscape of the Low Countries. De Heusch continued to focus on Italian scenes after his return to the Netherlands. Such paintings were more popular among the Dutch during the seventeenth and eighteenth century than views of their native countryside. In this picturesque scene the woman in the foreground carries a turkey, which would have been considered somewhat exotic, having been first introduced to southern Europe from America in the early sixteenth century.ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. John Adam, Jr.
