Label TextErnst (1891–1976) began making Surrealist collages in 1919. He cut engraved illustrations from mail-order catalogues and teaching manuals, and pasted disparate elements together into odd, sometimes disturbing images. In Paris during the 1920s, Ernst invented new techniques to complement his style. One was decalcomania, a way of creating images by pressing paint between two surfaces. Ernst collaborated with Joan Miró on designs for ballet productions of Sergei Diaghilev, and he appeared in Luis Buñuel’s Surrealist film L’Âge d’Or.
