Label TextNewman’s preference for long exposures, strong lines, and keeping both subject and background in sharp focus, is evident here and perfectly suited to Mondrian’s (1872-1944) personality and painting style. Along with Theo van Doesburg, Mondrian led the De Stijl movement, a style based upon strict geometry. In 1919 the artist developed imagery confined to vertical and horizontal black lines painted onto unmodulated fields of white, accented by primary colors. With these simple grids Mondrian created an astonishing range of theme, mood, and depth. ProvenanceArnold Newman, 39 West 67th Street, New York 23, New York
