Label TextThe Alsatian sculptor, painter, and poet, Arp (1886–1966) was a pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Switzerland and Germany. In 1926 he moved to Paris and helped found the artists’ group Abstraction-Création.
In the 1930s, Arp produced small sculptures made of multiple elements that the viewer could pick up, separate, and rearrange into new configurations. After World War II the artist began to show his work in the United States and became well known for his simple forms and sophisticated sculptural concepts.
