DescriptionLarge head and bust "close-up" portrait of the eminent actor of women's roles. He is attired in women's clothes and his hair is dressed in the fashion ofthe day for women. The purple cap that appears on his forehead was worn because all actors of women's roles were , by an edict fo the Tokugawa government obliged to shave their foreheads so that while upon the stage they would not be mistaken for women.
