DescriptionPrint no. 39 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces"Label TextUnder a canopy of cliffs, pilgrims ascend a stone staircase to the cave shrine of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. This print exhibits a number of color printing techniques. The mist, blue sky, rocks, and the river all are portrayed in brilliant printed gradations (bokashi). Hiroshige achieved the whiteness of the clouds by holding areas of unprinted paper in reserve. Overprinting (one color over another) is also used to add dimensionality with an accent of brown to the top of the grey rocks in the upper left.
