Label TextWhere would this large marble statue have stood? This statue would have been placed in the tomb of a Roman woman. Only the wealthy could afford such expensive commemorative monuments. Her veiled head, heavy draperies, and serious demeanor convey an image of respectability. The sculptor portrayed her realistically in keeping with the style of the period. Flaws in the marble were patched by the Roman sculptor, and the whole piece would have been painted. ProvenancePurchase from Robin Symes Limited, London
