Label TextThis half-draped figure of Venus/Aphrodite is derived from a famous Greek sculpture by Praxiteles. The cloak loosely draped around her lower body emphasizes her sensuality as goddess of sexual love. The first Roman emperors traced their mythical origins to Venus, and some empresses were deified as her. The cult of Venus was popular across the Roman Empire as attested by the great number of such statues found in public and private settings. ProvenanceSebasti & Reali, Rome Italy
