DescriptionBaluster shape, birds and trees and flowers. Famille verte enemals. No. 122 of Williams collection.Label TextThis early 18th-century vase exhibits the technical mastery that was possible with the famille verte (“green family”) palette of enamels. The scene decorating the body includes two phoenixes and a small yellow bird amidst peonies and other garden flowers. Butterflies and floral sprays decorate the neck. The designs were first outlined with a black (iron-manganese-cobalt) pigment and iron-red enamel before being colored with translucent overglaze enamels. Final touch-ups, emphasizing certain outlines, were made with black pigment. The decoration notably includes blue enamel that is bright and lustrous, showing a clear improvement over the experimental blue enamel used in the Kangxi period (cf. the mallet-shaped famille verte vase, 1937.145).ProvenanceEmile F.
