DescriptionUpon his death last year, Art Journal named Antonio Frasconi the greatest woodcut printmaker of his generation. One of the few post-World War II printmakers who printed his own work without the aid of a master printer, Frasconi created this nearly life-size depiction of hanging meats using eight different color blocks.

Influenced by political cartoons as a youth, Frasconi’s work is often directed at social issues related to civil rights, the Vietnam War, and victims of violence in Latin America. 14th Street Meat Market’s mass of flesh reflects a moment in Frasconi’s career when he focused on the labor class in New York, namely fishermen on the wharves and butchers in the meatpacking district.
