Label TextDaniell’s portraits are noted for their sympathetic spark of humanity. A camera bug since childhood, he made his first serious photographs along the banks of the Hudson River in the 1930s. A decade later Daniell began showing his work at Alfred Stieglitz’s Manhattan gallery “An American Place.”
Daniell befriended many of the artists who exhibited there, including Georgia O’Keeffe and John Marin (1870-1953). Marin was one of the country’s most celebrated modernist artists, known for his improvisational use of color and abstract space, especially in the medium of watercolor.
