Label TextOn the day of President Kennedy’s funeral, Mass was celebrated at the national cathedral. Then the casket was borne again by caisson on the final leg to Arlington National Cemetery for burial. As the casket was carried down the front cathedral steps, Jacqueline Kennedy whispered to her son, who saluted his father’s coffin. Stearns’s touching photograph became an iconic representation of the 1960s. Considered too young to attend the final interment, the children said goodbye to their father at this moment. On View
