Label TextAlthough this panel closely resembles the one showing Saint John the Baptist by Defendente, it is doubtful they came from the same altarpiece. The parapets behind the saints are of different heights, which would be illogical in close proximity. Moreover, since both saints look to the right, they could not have been placed on opposite sides of an altarpiece but must both be left-hand wings; and a five-piece ensemble is rare in the Piedmont region at this time. An incised line forming an arch at the top of this panel indicates that the artist considered making the top of the picture round before he settled on the final form.ProvenancePhilip J.
