Watermark: BEVERLY INGRES U.S.A.Label TextSelf-taught as a painter, Graves also studied Zen Buddhism. When he gained national recognition as a painter in the 1940s, he looked to Asian art for ways to approach nature more directly. He adopted Chinese and Japanese techniques, like the use of ink washes and thin mulberry paper. For much of Graves’ career he returned to the subject of the “Blind Bird” in paintings influenced by Mark Tobey’s calligraphy.
