DescriptionThe design of this Shield-back chair with its kylix, swag, and fan motifs on the splat is often found on Rhode Island side chairs connected with the Providence workshop of John Carlile & Sons. The curved frame of the back is carved with reeding on its edges, and is joined almost seamlessly with the rear stiles. These extend into the back Stump legs, giving the chair a canted profile. Where the rear legs join with the seat rail, repairs on the rear surface of each leg can be seen. The seat is trapezoidal with a curved front edge, and the upholstery has been replaced and secured with decorative brass tacks. This addition obstructs the seat rails from easy viewing. The anterior surface of the front Marlborough legs is carved with reeding on both the inner and outer edges. The 'H' stretcher and rear stretchers are rectangular and undecorated.
