DescriptionWith its clean lines and Neoclassical motifs, this side chair is a typical example of Federal era furniture. It has a Banister back with four narrow spindles that fan out at the crest rail, each of them with decorative carvings of rectangle rosettes and leaves. The crest rail is curved like a bow and beaded on both edges, with a deeper centre groove. This design borders almost the entire front surface of the back, creating a frame with the stiles and bottom rail. This "frame" terminates above where the stiles, which are continuous with the rear legs, are joined to the seat rail. The upolstery on the trapezoidal seat has been replaced and obstructs the seat rail surfaces from view. The rear Stump legs and cantered chair back give the chair a cantered profile. The rectangular 'H' and rear stretchers are not carved, and the anterior surface of the front Marlborough legs are beaded on both edges, with a convex, rounded ridge in the center.
