DescriptionChrist is shown as the Redeemer, displaying his wounds. A river of fire flows from beneath his feet and separates the souls of the blessed, who kneel on the left, from the damned on the right. Angels on either side of Christ hold instruments of the Passion, a third blows a trumpet to signal the end of the world, and a fourth rolls up a scroll symbolic of the destruction of the heavens. The heads of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, the two chief intercessors for man, appear above the mandorla around Christ.
Label Text2/24/2016: Surrounded by angels, Jesus appears as Redeemer of humanity, displaying his wounds from his crucifixion. The river of fire flowing from his feet separates the souls of the saved from the damned, at right. The Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, among the most important figures to intercede on behalf of humanity, hover behind Christ.ProvenanceD'Atri (dealer), Paris, France; collection of Robert Langton Douglas (1864-1951), London, by 1923; purchased for the museum by Mrs. Homer Gage (formerly Mabel R.
