DescriptionChrist kneels in the middle, facing right, with hands raised towards the chalice extended by the angel. Below, the three apostles: Peter, John, and James. The scene is enclosed by a wickerwork fence with, above, the city of Jerusalem. Colors include green, red, blue, brown, and gilding.Label TextBeginning with the fourteenth century, sculptors repeated the message of the Mass by decorating altars with scenes of the Passion. This fragment of an alabaster altarpiece depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane while his disciples sleep nearby. The round faces and small features suggest that this piece originated in South Germany.ProvenanceSaid to be from the Frauencloster (convent) at Inzighofen or Stetten near Hechingen, Germany; Collection of Prince Hohenzollern Sigmaringen, Germany, no. 7271; Goldschmidt Galleries, New York; purchased by Brummer Gallery, New York, May 1, 1929 [object inventory card no.
