DescriptionCalligraphy on obverse and reverse, from GULESTAN (Rose Garden) of Sa'diLabel TextA schoolmaster is so uncouth and tyrannical toward his young charges that he is dismissed. His meek and wise successor cannot keep order in the school so the original master is restored to his post. The painting shows the cruel teacher beating the feet of a student with a stick. This detached folio is froman unidentified manuscriptof the Gulestan of Sa'di (composed 1258 a.d.) this is attributed on the basis of style to the commercial Studios of late sixteenth-century Shiraz.ProvenanceAlexander H.
