Label TextThis poem relates to the story of Zulaikha who has fallen in love with a beautiful young man who appeared to her in her dreams. One day, passing by a crowd assembled at the Egyptian court, she spies Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, and recognizes him as the man from her dreams. When Joseph is auctioned, Zulaikha sells her pearls to buy him. In a minor incident at the auction, an old woman who has nothing to sell but a bit of braided yarn, attends only to see the beautiful slave. This is the incident depicted; Zulaikha is not shown. Joseph's saintliness is indicated by his flaming aura. The entire painted area has been cue out and remounted on the back of a text page of the same work. The work--particularly the landscape-- has been heavily repainted and rebordered.ProvenanceAlexander H. Bullock, Worcester MA
