Label TextThe son of a painter and a poet, Pousette-Dart was a youthful prodigy. He worked in a photography studio in his twenties, while painting on his own in the evenings. Through his paintings he became one of the youngest members of the group loosely referred to as the Abstract Expressionists. In the mid-1940s, he used the camera to record natural motifs, which he developed further in his abstract drawings and paintings. Pousette-Dart also made portraits of his family and artist friends. In some of his portraits of painter Barnett Newman (1905-1970), he used multiple exposures to superimpose the artist’s image with objects of African art that inspired both artists. ProvenanceG.W.
