Label TextPousette-Dart used photography as a creative tool for his painting. “The camera is blind,” he wrote in his journal. “It is you who must see your own picture and persevere until you capture [your subjects], within their light.” Here Pousette-Dart combined the likeness of his friend Mark Rothko (1903-1970), with a drawing by Rothko in the fog of a cold window. Rothko progressed from this calligraphic style to abstract imagery concentrating on formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale. ProvenanceG.W. Einstein Co.
