Label TextA native of Antwerp, Jacob Jordaens was a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens. Like him, he painted in all the traditional categories except still life. This painting was originally attributed to Rubens, but it is now considered to be a work of Jordaens dating from the period about 1615-1620, when Rubens' influence is most strongly felt in his art. It shows the firm brushstroke, solidity of form, and color scheme that are characteristic of this early period in Jordaens' career. Another sketch of the same girl is in a collection in Zurich. Both were originally on one panel, which was divided sometime before 1898.ProvenanceM.H. Drey, Ltd., London England
