Label TextThe second son of Peter Brueghel the Elder, born the year before his father's death, Jan Brueghel the Elder achieved great fame in his own life time as a painter of both still life and landscape. He often collaborated with major artists of the time including Peter Paul Rubens.
The gondolas and the domed structure in the background associate this imaginary scene with Venice, but there are Netherlandish elements in the building on the dock and the river barges from northern European tied up at the wharf. This indicates that this is probably one of the many works with Italianate elements executed by the Flemish master in Antwerp, sometime after his stay in Italy between 1590 and 1596.ProvenanceRobert and Mary S.
