Label TextTobey is often considered the mentor of the mystical painters of the American Northwest. Typical of his “white writing” style, this piece is overlain with webs of light-hued calligraphy upon a delicately interwoven abstract field. “In the Baha’i point of view,” Tobey wrote in 1934, “man will gradually come to understand the unity of the world and the oneness of mankind. My work has been influenced by this belief. I've tried to decentralize and interpenetrate so that all parts of a painting are of related value.”Provenance(Willard Gallery, New York, 1947); William H. Lane Foundation, 1955-76
