Label TextThis drawing, done on April 11, 1927, is one of a handful in which Baumann tried to capture the peculiar atmosphere of an overcast day, when a rainstorm raged through the Grand Canyon. Clouds mute the colors as sheets of rain inundate the landscape at upper right. "With all the expanse of horizon to observe them in, rains take on a new meaning [in the West]," he once wrote. "A steady gentle downpour of benefit to the land may turn into a cloudburst carrying fertile fields into raging arroyos. The Indians in the language distinguish the two as female and male rain."ProvenanceThe artist; Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CA
