Label TextIn no other Pahari state were portraits painted with such zeal and in such number as in Mankot. Although the precise position and duties of this lesser nobleman are unknown, his bird and dagger indicate he enjoyed the usual pastimes of keeping birds and learning the arts of war.
The work is from a late phase of Mankot painting that owes its fine modeling and meticulous line and detail to the earlier tradition of Mughal portraiture. It does, however, have strong Rajput features, particularly the use of flat planes, the deliberate lack of perspective, and the broad expanses of color.
