Label TextWalter Auerbach and his wife Ellen—who was a Bauhaus-trained designer—arrived in the United States in 1935. In New York they joined a circle of artists including neighbors Willem and Elaine De Kooning, and Kline (1910-1962).
At the time this portrait was taken, Kline was at work on a series of large, bold canvases with energized slashes of black on white grounds. Along with Jackson Pollock’s splash and drip paintings, these became the quintessential works associated with Abstract Expressionism at the time they were made.
