Label TextThe 1968 presidential campaign exposed deep divisions in American culture. It took place amid the anxiety following the assassinations of candidate Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which sparked riots across the country. Later, protestors clashed with police outside the Democratic National Convention. Nixon opposed busing to achieve school desegregation. He condemned the Supreme Court for promoting civil rights and the separation of church and state. Perhaps, however, it was Nixon’s promise to restore law and order that most influenced his election. On View
