Label TextA leading figure in the New York School of gestural painters during the 1950s, Hartigan enjoyed the vibrant creative circles of Greenwich Village, that included artists, poets, and musicians. She was the only woman to have her work included in the landmark exhibition, “The New American Painting,” organized by New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. Italian painter and designer Floriano Vecchi and Richard Miller were the two founders of Tiber Press. Tiber introduced many artists like Hartigan and Andy Warhol to the technique of silkscreen-printing. Many of Hartigan’s screenprints were done in collaboration with contemporary poets.
