DescriptionPrint no. 51 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces"
Label TextThe port of Shimonoseki lies on the southwestern tip of Honshu Island, across the Tsushima Strait from the Korean peninsula. This print juxtaposes several large merchant vessels with a smaller boat in the foreground, which is likely being used to ferry passengers to one of the large ships. In his earlier series, Harbors of Japan (1840−1842), Hiroshige presented a similar scene with two women and a ferryman, here eliminating only the detail of a ladder for climbing onto the ship.
