DescriptionPrint no. 51 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces"Label TextThe port of Shimonoseki lies on the southwestern tip of Honshu Island, across the Tsushima Strait from the Korean peninsula. This print juxtaposes several large merchant vessels with a smaller boat in the foreground, which is likely being used to ferry passengers to one of the large ships. In his earlier series, Harbors of Japan (1840−1842), Hiroshige presented a similar scene with two women and a ferryman, here eliminating only the detail of a ladder for climbing onto the ship.
