Label TextIn the mid-1560s, Spranger made his way to Rome. He worked with Giulio Clovio, and in 1570 Pope Pius V appointed him court painter. Spranger influenced Karel van Mander, who took his ideas, imagery, and sheaf of his Mannerist drawings back to th Netherlands. The Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II, summoned Spranger to Vienna, but died soon after his arrival in 1576. His successor Rudolf II became a close friend and patron to the artist. After the imperial court moved to Prague, Muller was able to get Spranger’s drawings to engrave.ProvenanceJames Bergquist, Boston, MA
