Label TextSweelinck (1562–1621) was an important musician in Amsterdam. At age nineteen he succeed his father as organist at the Oude Kerk, and kept the job for the rest of his life. He published three influential volumes of chansons, and many choral psalm settings. Sweelinck signed his brother Gerrit to an apprenticeship with Cornelis van Haarlem. He produced an interesting oeuvre of Mannerist paintings and prints, but apparently was never dependent upon his artistic career. This revealing portrait suggests the reach and cosmopolitan character of the Haarlem art circles.ProvenanceJan Johnson, Montreal, Canada
