Label TextWhile traveling in Italy, De Vos was transformed by Roman and Venetian art. After the iconoclasm in the South Netherlands in 1566, he redecorated many Antwerp churches. He also became one of the era’s most prolific designers for prints. De Vos founded the society of the Romanists in Antwerp, an organization for artists, connoisseurs, and scholars who had been to Rome. This plate blames wine as a corrupting influence. Its moralizing captions belie the titillating subject. Images of the “merry company” became popular in Netherlandish Baroque art.ProvenanceMr. James Bergquist, Newton Centre, MA
