Label TextThe final plate in the series represents the Last Judgement, and the end of the world in terms of retribution, the “Terrible Advent of Christ.” While souls of the redeemed gather in heaven with the Lord, chaos reigns on earth. Storms devastate sea and land to the blast of angels’ trumpets, and stars fall from the sky. We can find some comfort in the downfall of corrupt oppressors. Soldiers and churchmen scream in terror, rich men drop their moneybags, and kings their scepters at the approach of their death and damnation.ProvenanceMr. James Bergquist, Newton Centre, MA
