Label TextThis is one from a series representing mythological subjects in landscapes with ancient ruins, just the sort of Italianate product that made Aux quatre vents such a famous printshop. This tragic story, retold by the Roman poet Ovid, tells of how Venus fell in love with the handsome mortal Adonis. They hunted side by side, but his youthful recklessness frightened the goddess. She tried to protect him, but he ignored her warnings and was killed by a boar. The Antwerp printshop also made print series representing Bible stories amid fantastic ancient landscapes.ProvenanceTom Freudenheim, New York, NY
