Label TextGoya claimed to have witnessed the tragic events in Madrid on June 15, 1801. Matadors Pedro Romero and “El Chiclanero” performed courageously that evening. However, when the third bull was released, it trotted across the ring and jumped into the stands. The Mayor of Torrejón tried to distract the beast with his jacket, while his friends and relatives fled in terror. The bull killed him instantly, goring him in the chest and raising him aloft. Despite these vivid memories and specific images, so far historians have failed to confirm this legendary tragedy or identify the other victims.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
